Who are we at Dark Loch Hounds?
And why we are preserving Irish Wolfhounds and Scottish Deerhounds
Hello and welcome!
Dark Loch Hounds is a small hobby kennel in Salt Lake City Utah. We are actively involved in the dog sports and showing world. Our favorite activities are conformation showing, and FastCAT. We believe in having well-rounded, happy, healthy dogs. In order to do this, we try to find activities that our individual dogs enjoy and find time to work with them one on one in these areas.
As we started our journey with purebred dogs we never imagined we would end up here, but as we have continued to become more involved in these wonderful breeds, we found our calling. We want to share these beautiful animals with the world.
The goal of this blog is to educate families about the needs and requirements for these two breeds, and help families decide if one of them might be the right dog for their lifestyle. These wonderful breeds are poetry in motion, and bring joy with them wherever they go, but they are not the perfect dog for every family.
Anyone considering one of these magnificent breeds should consider several things including: Their obvious size, the exercise requirements for an active healthy sighthound, the possible prey instincts, the amount of food that a growing pup requires, the fact that these breed grow slowly- especially the Irish Wolfhounds which can take between 2-4 years to reach full maturity, the higher cost of veterinary expenses for a giant breed dog, that training must be started early and worked on their whole life long, as well as the need for more physical space for them to live in.
Our dogs are part of every aspect of our lives. They live in our home, they sleep in our room, and they are a large part of the joy in our lives.
We are dedicated to improving our beloved breeds through proper health screenings, through knowledge of pedigrees and foundation lines, and are committed to temperament testing of all of our dogs. Our dogs are our pride and joy and we aspire to give them the best lives we are able.
If you have any questions about Irish Wolfhounds or Scottish Deerhounds, please feel free to reach out. I enjoy very little in life as much as I enjoy talking about my dogs and my favorite breeds.
